# Rhyme God's word list `lexicon.tsv` is the pronunciation list that Rhyme God searches, as shipped in Rhyme God 1.2.1 (build 6) for iPhone, iPad and Mac. It is published here because it is an adaptation of works licensed CC BY-SA 4.0, which asks that adaptations be shared under the same terms. `glossary.tsv`, the dictionary and thesaurus behind the app's meaning card, is published beside it. Keep this notice with the files. ## Licence `lexicon.tsv` is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0): https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/ — legal code at https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode. You may copy it, change it and sell it, provided you credit the sources below, say what you changed, and share what you make from it under the same licence. It comes with no warranty of any kind. `glossary.tsv` is WordNet 3.1 data, cut down as described below, under the WordNet licence reproduced at the end of this notice. The choice of words follows `lexicon.tsv`, so where that matters the glossary is offered under CC BY-SA 4.0 as well. ## What `lexicon.tsv` is made from 1. **The CMU Pronouncing Dictionary** — Copyright (C) 1993-2015 Carnegie Mellon University. https://github.com/cmusphinx/cmudict. Most of the pronunciations. BSD-style licence, reproduced in full below. 2. **FrequencyWords** by Hermit Dave — https://github.com/hermitdave/FrequencyWords — lists licensed CC BY-SA 4.0. How common each word is, which decides whether a word is kept and the rank it carries. The counts come from the OpenSubtitles corpus (https://www.opensubtitles.org/) as distributed by OPUS (https://opus.nlpl.eu/). 3. **English Wiktionary** — https://en.wiktionary.org/ — written by its contributors and licensed CC BY-SA 4.0 (also available under the GNU Free Documentation License), gathered with WikiPron (https://github.com/CUNY-CL/wikipron; Lee et al., "Massively multilingual pronunciation mining with WikiPron", LREC 2020). Pronunciations for words the CMU dictionary never had: emoji, ramen, rizz, cosplay. 4. **Rhyme God's own additions** — © 2026 Selfish Pursuits, licensed CC BY-SA 4.0 like the rest: a short hand-written list of words newer than both dictionaries (vape, tiktok, gaslighting) and of sung stresses added beside a word's spoken one (HEL-lo beside hel-LO). ## What was changed Words were ranked by frequency and the rare ones dropped; names and modern coinages were tagged; slurs were removed. Wiktionary's pronunciations were converted from IPA to the CMU dictionary's ARPAbet notation, and their stress was worked out from the vowels, since Wiktionary's published lists carry no stress marks. The hand-written words and sung stresses were added. WordNet was cut to the words in this list, with at most four meanings a word and only synonyms that are themselves in the list. `Scripts/build_lexicon.py` and `Scripts/build_glossary.py` in the Rhyme God repository build the two files and document each step. ## Format `lexicon.tsv`: one pronunciation per line, tab separated: ``` word rank flags ARPAbet phones ``` `rank` is the frequency rank, lower being more common. `flags` is `n` for a name, `m` for a modern or slang word, empty otherwise. `glossary.tsv`: one sense per line, in WordNet's order (most common first), tab separated: ``` word part of speech (n, v, adj, adv) definition synonyms, comma-separated antonyms ``` ## The CMU Pronouncing Dictionary licence Copyright (C) 1993-2015 Carnegie Mellon University.
